Burton Albion to play 47-year-old goalkeeping coach

"Get my back pills!"

League Two side Burton Albion convinced their 47-year-old goalkeeper coach, former Leicester and Birmingham City player Kevin Poole, to come out of retirement and register as a player for one last season at the end of their last campaign. They needed a backup for starting keeper Adam Legzdins, but Legzdins dislocated his finger, so now Poole is in line to start the club's Johnstone's Paint Trophy match against Rotherham on Wednesday.

From the Telegraph:

He made six appearances in League Two last season and finished the campaign as Albion's number one but this will be his first game of this season.

"I will jump into the game and go and enjoy it," Poole told BBC Radio Derby.

The Bromsgrove-born keeper came through the youth ranks at Aston Villa, turning professional in 1981. He has played for nine clubs and made over 400 appearances during a 29-year career.

I was hoping he would say something like, "I'm too old for this s***," but apparently someone hasn't watched Lethal Weapon in a while.

While, 47 is old for a professional footballer, it doesn't make Poole the oldest. Sir Stanley Matthews, of course, played for Stoke at the age of 50. Then there's Jeremy Toulalan, but he just looks like he's 50.
